As we continue to strive toward "academic excellence", it's important to remember that as humans there are basic things that we need to keep in mind to keep both our bodies, and more importantly our minds healthy in this university experience. Too frequently students forget this and end up sick, or just miserable by the time they get their degrees, resulting in the all too familiar "why did I even bother to do this!"
1. Weigh the options: University generally means a lot of debt, that may haunt you for the rest of your days. Make SURE what you want to do requires a university degree before you go ahead and shell out the cash. Please don't fall into social or parental pressures to go if you really don't want to!
2. Food, food, food: Because of that debt, university students generally don't have a lot of money, and they certainly don't have a lot of time... if this means you end up eating nothing but instant ramen noodles, prepackaged fish and chips, TV dinners, canned tuna, and potato chips - your body is going to feel the results. The famous "freshman 15" will creep into your midsection, and you're going to feel tired, listless, and miserable. Take care to eat decent food.
3. SLEEP: unfortunately this is one aspect I neglect, constantly. It's worth noting that while a caffeine addiction can have its benefits (ie: more work done faster), you'll also end up doing damage to your heart, mind, and certainly your brain itself. Check your consumption: if you end up realizing that you're drinking more than 10 cups of coffee a day, it may be time to reanalyze the situation.
4. Your Spine: More often than not, university requires a lot of books, particularly for undergraduates as they often don't have anywhere to store them while they are in class. Make sure to buy a high quality bookbag to carry all of this, as you'll end up with back problems later in life if you cheap out.
5. Finally, booze: Recreation is absolutely necessary to keep your mind in check, however, drinking every night is a bad idea. Undergrads may go through a phase where drinking like a fish is trendy and cool, but I'd say it's probably time to curb that behaviour by the third year, otherwise it can become... well addicting to say the least.
Now if I could only figure out how to follow all of this advice myself!

Hey once again folks, its that time again and I've noticed that I've been keeping blogs really well, but they're over too many sites! Some people are seeing me on YouTube, others on Revver, still others on social sites like MySpace and Facebook. So I figured it was time to make a unification macro. That being said, you can look forward to seeing many more blogs from me, as I now blog into one form that posts to all of these sites. With that in mind, though, I am trying to nudge everyone over to www.matthewwhite.ca, which I'm maintaining as kind of a games and academia Portfolio/CV.
Expect more ranting, game videos, game media, critiques, etc. from me in the very near future, but for now, please hop on over and check out the site, subscribe to my videos on YouTube, and all of that fun.
Cheers!
