Matthew White recipient of IGDA Scholarship - GDC'09

Hey there folks,

As I'm sure you're aware by the sidebar, I'm headed off to GDC this year in San Francisco. I was nominated as one of two people in Canada by the International Game Developer's Association to participate in the conference via a scholarship provided by them.

Game scholars from around the world competed for these scholarships. I'll aim to discuss my work on Role-Playing Games, Wayfarer, and other matters while I'm there.

For more information, feel free to hop over to www.gdconf.com - the keynotes, including Hideo Kojima, were recently announced.

Cheers!

WoW - Level 80 Warrior PVP, Titan's Grip

Nothing intellectual this time folks - sorry to disappoint.

In any case, here's a neat video of my warrior tearing things up on US - Moonrunner, Ruin battlegroup.

Enjoy.

Crayon Physics Deluxe

There's a game coming out very soon (actually by the time I post this it's already out) that merits talking about. It's called Crayon Physics Deluxe, which is the descendant of the pre-existing Crayon Physics.

Though it won the grand prize at this year's independent games festival, and has received considerable publicity, it still bears even more in my mind.

Perhaps one of the most significant challenges facing the games industry today is one of originality. Similar to the crash of 1983, during which a flood of less than stellar games caused the market demand to plummet (culminating with that horrendous abomination known as E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial), a glut of less-than-stellar derivative games ...

"Oh man, I totally need to buy Gears of Halo Theft Auto Raider Wars Dogs DS XVI"

...

In times like these, original content is droolworthy, and this is a game that will have tendrils dripping from your gaping jaw.

Crayon Physics deluxe is, exactly as it sounds, a game that employs both drawing and some fairly hefty physics calculations. The user draws boxes and shapes (whatever s/he likes) in order to solve a variety of puzzles. I can't accurately describe it, and I don't think a screenshot will do this justice.

I implore you to check out http://www.crayonphysics.com/
